What’s Involved in the Custody Process?
In Alabama, there are two types of custody: legal and physical. Legal custody refers to the parent responsible for making important decisions about their children’s healthcare, education, religion, and more. Physical custody refers to the parent with whom the children will primarily reside.
Alabama’s family courts prefer joint custody whenever possible, unless there are extenuating circumstances, such as one parent having a history of domestic violence, substance abuse, or neglect. In such cases, sole custody may be granted.
However, if this is not the case and you and your co-parent just don’t get along, we encourage you to reconsider asking for sole custody unless it is absolutely necessary. Think about your children. What kind of relationship do you want them to have with their other parent, and how will limiting that relationship affect them? We understand that collaborating with your co-parent can be difficult, but in the end, it will benefit your kids.
How Our Grant Custody Lawyer Can Help You
At Word Family Law Group, we strive to minimize the legal and emotional implications that divorce and custody matters can have on your and your children’s lives. We’ve been doing this long enough to understand how deeply a divorce can affect children, which is why we prioritize their well-being above all when creating a custody arrangement. We won’t push our own agenda or ideas but rather support what you think is best for your family.
We know that your kids are the most important people in your life, so it’s difficult to envision a future where you might spend less time with them. Even if you and your co-parent started on amicable terms, emotions may stir and tensions may rise, making it difficult to think clearly. We will encourage you to separate your emotions from the facts of your case so that you can make level-headed and informed decisions regarding your custody situation.
We will also encourage you to pursue mediation, as it’s less expensive, less stressful, and less time-consuming. However, if this collaborative process isn’t right for you, we are willing and able to fight for you in court.
In addition to legal guidance, we can help you with:
- Gathering, organizing, and filing important paperwork
- Creating child support arrangements
- Negotiating with your co-parent’s attorney
- Representing you in court
- Advocating for the best interests of your child
- And more

Christopher truly cares about his clients and the kids involved...they treat you like family not just another case . I would recommend them to anyone going thru divorce or a custody battle
The Christopher P. Word attorney law team is very kind, compassionate, knowledgeable and effective. My case was civil and family related, so it was extremely emotional for me. I highly recommend this firm for legal matters, especially family law.

We have left multiple messages, sent texts, and even visited his office in person, only to be told repeatedly that Attorney Word is "in court." While I hope he is providing better service to the clients he is supposedly in court for, we have seen no indication of fair representation or even basic professionalism in our case. To add insult to injury, our request for a refund has been ignored, which is no big surprise.
An attorney should never leave their clients in the dark, especially during such an emotionally charged and time-sensitive situation. This experience has been deeply frustrating, disappointing, and emotionally draining. I would strongly caution anyone considering retaining his services.

What sets him apart is his refusal to bend to political pressure, always standing firm in his principles and fighting for what is right. His professionalism and integrity are second to none, making him not just a great lawyer, but a great man as well. If you need a lawyer for a custody case, look no further—he is the best choice you could make.

Again to anyone that read my review and took it to heart, I am so very sorry. Please forgive me, I was deceived. If zero stars were an option, tbat is what my review would be, but if you decide to retain him , my advice is, if he doesn’t have the time to meet you in his office or provide a contract when you pay him thousands of dollars, SEEK FAR SUPERIOR COUNSEL, I wish I knew who that would be, but thus far my experience with attorneys is the same as doctors…. They speak to you in a condescending manner which in itself is disrespectful and they WILL NOT TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE YOU HAVE, because they spend years cultivating their relationships with DHR, your enemy.
